Earlier this year, the Atlanta rapper Bali Baby took an abrupt left turn to indulge her rockstar impulses on the pop-punkish Baylor Swift. Her new track, the jeering rap kiss-off “AMBER Alert,” is a return to the sound on which she made her name: barefaced trap fueled by an endless string of slap-happy punchlines. Bali is her most interesting in more experimental spaces, mining heartbreak for bedroom pop songs, but she is much more comfortable swaggering in and flexing proudly before her enemies. “Little bitch, I got the power/I am the man every hour,” she raps. There is a friskiness to Bali’s performances that make even her most confrontational lines seem like a tease; in her taunts, she’s more puckish than she is snide or nasty. Her raps draw power from direct associations (“Killing the game, it’s a cemetery”), and though some are too basic or too inexact to be effective on their own, they often catapult into something punchy. Her perky flows build to such moments, where her spirit seems inextinguishable. “I’m screaming ‘pussy is power!’/I lay in bed, and I’m making money by the hour,” she squeals, going from excitable to nonchalant in an instant. In reverting back to her default setting on “AMBER Alert,” Bali Baby reestablishes herself as a rap menace.
